Bayern began with Thiago, Arturo Vidal and Xabi Alonso in midfield in an effort to combat Atletico's aggressive approach, and although Carlo Ancelotti's men dominated possession, it was the hosts who had the better chances. Fernando Torres headed onto the post when it seemed easier to score, before Yannick Carrasco broke the deadlock with a drilled effort from the edge of the box. Thomas Müller had Bayern's best opportunity, but fired his volley straight at goalkeeper Jan Oblak from Thiago's clever dink.

Patience was the name of the game for Bayern after the break, but even with the introduction of Arjen Robben they made little headway against a dogged Atletico rearguard determined to preserve their lead. Robert Lewandowski went closest to scoring, but glanced his header wide from a clever pass from Alonso. Atletico should have doubled their lead after Vidal gave away a penalty with a clumsy challenge, but Antoine Griezmann crashed his spot-kick against the bar. Try as they might, Bayern were unable to find a way through and return home nursing their first defeat of the season.
