Tiller Russell's crime film, Silk Road, starring Jason Clarke, Nick Robinson, Katie Aselton, and Jimmi Simpson, is a film that's potential sadly gets dragged down due to its woeful dialogue choices and slightly overextended runtime.

There was something about Silk Road that deeply intrigued me given its subject matter. Named after the network of Asian trade routes that connected the East and the West, 'Silk Road' as it was called, became the dark web's hot spot for merchants to trade mainly drugs and weapons on the black market. It's a plotline that on paper seems too good to fail, it's an interesting film that never directly asks the audience to take a side and thus creates a compelling film that…

A boring cybercrime thriller. Jason Clarke stars as DEA agent Rick Bowden works to bring down Ross played by Nick Robinson, the creator of Silk Road, the first to launch a darknet website used specifically to sell and buy illicit drugs. Acting was flat, uninteresting characters, if anything, Clarke had a bit more arc. He’s always playing a shady character so it fits, but Ross, we’re just supposed to believe he’s a prodigy because he solved a Rubik’s cube in 30 seconds so he can code and run a pipeline website fueled by his libertarianism. Some familiar faces like Alexandra Shipp, Jimmi Simpson, Katie Aselton didn’t need to be in this, could have been played by anyone else, they were not written…

nick robinson we need to have a chat. i can’t keep doing this for you. not anymore. i don’t have that much time left and i can’t spend the rest of my life waiting for you to be in a good movie again. i mean i watched shadow in the cloud, which was okay. i watched strange but true which was... a movie. hell i even rewatched the 5th wave a bunch of times and i did it for you. i believe i’m a good person. i take second chances very seriously, i do. but you hit a point where it hurts too much.
i just can’t do it anymore.
i think we need a break.
text me in a few years when i write you a role in one of my movies. in the mean time... i guess we shall see.

For such a fascinating real life story, this is less than engrossing, although it’s not bad by any means. It’s mostly just the direction that needed more polishing. It’s a real shame because this is the kind of story you could have a lot of fun with. Like, if imagine if someone like Soderbergh made this - it could have been an absolute knockout.

Silk Road tells an interesting story, but the movie felt off at times. It was like it didn’t quite know what kind of movie it wanted to be.

The acting highlight is Jason Clarke. And, Paul Walter Hauser continues to dominate being cast in roles involving characters that probably still live in their mom’s basement.

In reality, Silk Road’s lasting impact is it made me wish I bought some Bitcoin back in 2009.

Nick Robinson made the "Silk Road",
    Hiding transactions all behind code.
    So Jason Clarke,
    Must now embark,
    Undercover before it implodes.

    2021 Films, Ranked

    SILK ROAD 021621:

desperately wants to be THE SOCIAL NETWORK (with an emphasis on desperately). poses as libertarian fanfic. yet, weirdly sympathetic to troubled cop jason clarke, who gets transferred to cybercrimes division and then takes notes from a youtube video on how to use a computer mouse. weirdly unsympathetic to the guy that's in jail for life for non-violent offenses like making a website, including a storyline using unsubstantiated allegations for which charges were dropped. tries to walk it back a bit with text at the end, but maybe just don't sensationalize it in the first place? looks like shit. paul walter hauser was having some fun, at least.

An absolute mess. This is a case of what could’ve been, the true story behind Silk Road is excellent and could’ve made a great film if in the right hands. I just kept thinking how great it would’ve been if written by Aaron Sorkin and directed by David Fincher, a kind of sibling film to The Social Network.

As it is this film is so messy, clunky dialogue, haphazard editing (weird small random scenes in between proper scenes), pacing that is completely all over the place, boring acting from usually decent performers (watching Jason Clarke fumble over how to use a computer while delivering lines like “I’ve been catching bad guys before you were shaving your nuts” and “I need…

    My LATimes review

  • Silk road - gebieter des darknets imdb

I'm still making my way through Night Stalker, which is the ambitious and compelling Netflix series about the manhunt for the infamous serial murderer who terrorized Los Angeles decades ago. That show is gripping on multiple levels and one of its strongest aspects is getting to know the complications in the lives of the agents assigned to the case. Alex Winter's 2017 doc Deep Web already told the basic story of Silk Road, and most of what we're left with in the dramatization are predictable TV movie contrivances.

Cybercrime is something tough to represent in a dramatic film because so much of the time is spent with characters just staring at laptops. I guess that was the tragic flaw of…

Bitcoinzzzz go boom on the dark web!

    Terrible screenplay. Horrendous dialogue.

Gotta turn on Mr. Robot S1E1 just to cleanse my pallette.

I lament the day we get a shitty movie like this about WSB and the Stonks to the moon.

Who is Rick Bowden based on?

One reason Bowden is so cliché is because he isn't even real. Russell has crafted him as a composite of various D.E.A. agents who were on the hunt for Ulbricht.

What is Silk Road in dark web?

The Silk Road was an online black market where users could buy and sell illicit goods anonymously. It operated via darknets, anonymous networks that can only be accessed through specialized software like Tor Browser. The content of darknets makes up the dark web — Silk Road was the first modern dark web marketplace.

Is Silk Road worth watching?

Silk Road has solid performances from most of the cast members, but also too many eye-rolling moments of melodrama that were obviously fabricated for the movie. The movie gets a lot of elements wrong in how the DEA investigated this case. Silk Road presents too many ingredients without enough finesse.

Is there a movie on Silk Road?

Silk Road is a 2021 American crime thriller film, written for the screen and directed by Tiller Russell based on the Rolling Stone article "Dead End on Silk Road: Internet Crime Kingpin Ross Ulbricht's Big Fall" by David Kushner.
