Informal Powers The things a governor is able to do, such as command media attention or persuade party members, based on personality or position, not on formal authority. Appointment Powers A governor's ability to pick individuals to run state government, such as appointing cabinet secretaries. Impeachment A process through which the legislature can remove executive branch officials, such as the governor, or judges from offices for corruption or other reasons. Recall Election A special election allowing voters to remove an elected official from office before the end of his or her term. They have very different responsibilities depending each state's laws. Attorney General- The "top law enforcement officer in the state." They have become major political players in lawsuits against businesses (Ex: Tobacco) and the federal government. Many Attorney Generals have launched successful campaigns to become governor. Other Offices- These offices vary widely. Some states elect officials, such as the secretaries of education or/and agriculture, that are appointed by governors in other states.
