What is Conflict Resolution?

Conflict resolution is the process of resolving a dispute or a conflict permanently, by adequately addressing each side’s interests so that they are satisfied with the outcome.

When disputes arise in business and personal relationships, it’s easy to avoid conflict to save the relationship. Nonetheless, it is possible to turn tense disputes into productive negotiations and maintain strong relationships.

Show

However, parties involved in conflict resolution (and negotiation more generally) tend to engage in reactive devaluation—that is, they distrust and downplay the merit of offers from the other side simply because they come from an “opponent.”

For negotiators managing conflicts with distrustful parties, the following conflict resolution tactics helpful:

  • Exercise strategic patience. Resist the urge to respond immediately to provocative acts. A slow-paced approach to conflict resolution can help de-escalate tensions while also strengthening parties’ motivations to end the dispute.
  • When possible, meet in person. Business negotiators would be wise to meet with counterparts in person when possible. More so than phone calls, face-to-face meetings humanize negotiators and foster rapport.
  • Enlist those the other party trusts. Look for people you and your counterpart both trust to mediate your dispute.Try to identify a neutral party within or outside the negotiation whose interests are aligned with yours and then provide that party with opportunities to voice a rationale for a proposed solution. Parties who are perceived by all sides as legitimate and fair will be the most successful messengers and can greatly increase the odds that your argument will be received and accepted.

Program on Negotiation co-founder William Ury emphasizes the importance of keeping the lines of communication open when dealing with difficult people and problems, saying: “You don’t deal with a problem with your neighbor by cutting the phone line.”
