    balance control

optic flow pattern gives us a cue of general body movement and navigation.

when manipulating optic flow, like moving a wall towards them we will have a falling forward feeling.

Objects in the optic array move outward from a focus of expansion, guiding navigation and aiding in balance

    CHAPTER 3: PERCEPTION

    Terms in this set (10)

    afterimage illusion

    - a type of optical illusion in which an image continues to appear briefly even after exposure to the actual image has ended. There are two major types of afterimages: positive afterimages and negative afterimages.
*positive afterimage- the colors of the original image are maintained. Essentially, the afterimage looks the same as the original image
*negative afterimage- the colors you see are inverted from the original image. For example, if you stare for a long time at a red image, you will see a green afterimage
    - the "shifting gears" illusion is also based on the afterimage

    gestalt grouping rules

    - "rules" we use to make sense of images
*proximity- close objects are grouped together
*similarity- like objects are grouped together
    *closure- "filling in" the gaps
    *continuity- we dislike broken-up pieces
*contiguity- link 2 events (in a cause & effect manner) occuring close in time

    figure ground rule

    - relating to or denoting the perception of images by the distinction of objects from a background from which they appear to stand out, especially in contexts where this distinction is ambiguous.

    perceptual set

    - perceiving things a certain way because previous experience or expectations influences those perceptions (seeing what you expect to see)

    context effect

    - what we perceive depends on the surrounding environment

binocular & monocular cues & binocular disparity

Depth perception is made possible by:
    - binocular cues: depth cues requiring 2 eyes. These work because of:
*convergence- eyes turning inward as objects get closer
*binocular disparity- the difference in image location of an object seen by the left and right eyes, resulting from the eyes' horizontal separation (parallax)
    - monocular cues: cues for depth only requiring one eye;
*linear perspective (the relative size, shape, and position of objects are determined by drawn or imagined lines converging at a point on the horizon)
*relative size (things that are closer appear larger)
*interposition (or overlapping position of objects)
*aerial perspecive (representing more distant objects as fainter)
*texture gradient (closer things are the more texture you will see)
*relative motion or "motion parallax" (we view objects that are closer to us and moving faster than objects that are further away from us)
*accommodation (occurs with both eyes, but it is still a monocular cue, because one eye alone would give the same information as would both; refers to the feedback we receive from the muscles in the eye that cause the lens to bulge or get thinner)

context effects (color, environmental context effects)

    - color context effects: when a specific color appears as a different color due to its surroundings
    - environmental context effects: (environmental factors) that surrounds an event effects how an event is perceived and remembered. This effect holds that an event is more favorably perceived and remembered when the surrounding environment is comfortable and appealing.

    state-dependent memory

    - the phenomenon through which memory retrieval is most efficient when an individual is in the same state of consciousness as they were when the memory was formed.

    mood-congruent memory

    - occurs where current mood helps recall of mood-congruent material, regardless of our mood at the time the material was stored. Thus when we are happy, we are more likely to remember happy events

    misinformation effect

    - occurs when misleading information is incorporated into one's memory after an event.
