A new edition of the UEFA Nations League kicked off in June 2022 with a champion set to be crowned in 2023, as well as 10 promotion and 10 relegation spots to be determined. Reigning champions France will relinquish their title after suffering early elimination, while the other European powers will be vying for a chance to succeed Les Bleus.

The UEFA Nations League was launched in 2018 as a way to replace the countless friendlies that filled the dates between more coveted international competitions like the FIFA World Cup and Euros. Instead, national teams now have meaningful competition to fill the gaps with each Nations League cycle scheduled to span two years.

All 55 member nations of European governing body UEFA are spread across four "leagues" or tiers. Each league was originally created back in 2018 based on the FIFA World Rankings at the time, and since that first edition of the Nations League, teams have won promotion into higher-ranked leagues, while others have suffered relegation to lower tiers based on their performance.

League A, League B, and League C are split into four groups of four teams. League D features the remaining seven countries split into just two groups — four teams in one group and three in the other.

How UEFA Nations League works

In League A, the four 2022/23 group winners — Croatia, Italy, Netherlands and one of Portugal or Spain — advance to play for the Nations League title in June 2023.

Meanwhile, in Leagues B, C and D, the 2022/23 group winners are promoted to the next highest league ahead of the next edition. Here are the countries that have clinched promotion so far:

  • Promoted to League A (2 of 4): Israel, Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Promoted to League B (4 of 4): Turkey, Greece, Kazakhstan, Georgia
  • Promoted to League C (2 of 4): Estonia, Latvia

In Leagues A and B, the last-place team in each group is automatically relegated down a tier, while the bottom teams in League C will compete in a relegation playoff, with two of the four nations dropping down to the lowest league (League D).

  • Relegated to League B (3 of 4): Austria, England, Wales
  • Relegated to League C (2 of 4): Russia, Romania
  • Relegation to League D (3 of 4): Lithuania, Belarus, Gibraltar in relegation playoffs

The entire 2022-23 UEFA Nations League group stage will be completed by September 2022, leaving just a handful of verdicts to be handed down in 2023 and early 2024.
