Terms in this set (20)structural functionalism Society is an orderly system of interconnected parts that perform functions and work together in harmony to maintain stability. Spencer Structural functionalist, believed that society operates like interdependent body parts, Social Darwinism. Durkheim Structural functionalist, social integration or "organic solidarity," division of labor, anomie (normlessness). Considered Father of Structural Functionalism. Wrote on suicide. Parsons Structural functionalist, (1950s) promoted social order, structures, functions. Merton Structural functionalist, (1960s), allowed for a variety of functions: 1. manifest functions-recognized or intended consequences 2. latent functions-unrecognized and unintended functions 3. dysfunctions-undesirable consequences (it's only a problem if it hurts society) Structural functionalism critique This theory overlooks variations, social inequality, conflicts and change. Too general / macro. Blames individuals for problems. Too conservative. Conflict Theory A macro theory that says society is made up of different groups and interests that compete for unequal distributions of power and resources. Focuses on inequality and blames the power elite for problems. Marx (1818-1883) critical of capitalism, assumed class confict, wanted economic equality and a classless society. W.E.B. DuBois (1868-1963) Non-Marxist conflict theorist, focus on social conflict, values, racism, wanted equality, especially racial equality. Addams (1860-1935) Non-Marxist conflict theorist, Chicago School, supported settlement house movement, challenged poverty. Feminist theory promotes including women's voices and experiences in research, and challenges inequalities. Conflict theory critique minimizes interdependence, stability and shared values. Too much focus on economics, too macro, blames society, too liberal. Symbolic interactionism A micro theory - society is created by individuals interacting in small groups where they socially construct shared definitions and meanings, based on their everyday interactions. Subjective interpretations, meanings and symbols, with face-to-face interactions in specific situations. Weber (1864-1920), symbolic interactionist, questioned definitions of "norms," was interested in political-economy and bureaucracies (macro) but also studied people's values and perspectives (micro) to gain verstehen (understanding) of social ideas and actions. Chicago School Studied real world as human laboratories, striving to meet human needs. Cooley (1864-1929), symbolic interactionist, studied how we shape our identities through the perceptions of others. Mead (1863-1931), symbolic interactionist, traced the self/personality to social experiences, considered how we are socialized, language as a symbol. Theorem Symbolic interactionist, "If men define situations as real, they are real in their consequences." Blumer (1960s), symbolic interactionist, believed that we learn to behave through our interpretations and interactions with others. Symbolic interactionism critique This theory is criticized for ignoring macro, social structure.
