-trinity community: burakumin live with each other (flourish and bond on memories of hardship)
-engage in work they specialize in (butchery, leather work, slaughtering animals: slaughtering animals was deemed unclean by the dominant japanese)
-dancing and the arts (forms of entertainment to drive away impurity)
jobs were unstable
this lead to a buraku culture that was flexible and utilitarian; utilitarian because they were inclined to take up any jobs useful for survival, flexible in that their cultural activities do not require a license

buraku and non-buraku cultures are very similar, but the fact that the burke are discriminated against divides the two
how is buraku culture double-faceted?
miserable and proud at the same time
-nothing good about being a buraku but they have developed a fighting spirit to fight their discrimination; they are thinking about the history which they use for resistance
diversity in buraku culture
government aid help, some are urban, others are agrarian
buraku is experiencing more non-buraku; fishing buraku community is depopulating
transformation of buraku culture
-discrimination has changed! so the buraku culture has changed
-non-burakumin are now living with brakeman; the boundaries are not clear
-increased social stratification within buraku communities cause brakeman to lose sense of cohesiveness
-cohsion is declining; memory of hardship (which once held them together) is disappearing
-many buraku liberation movements (want to revive lost identity)
how can these minority cultures survive?
it's because of these movements; these minority can survive is they actively pursue it
