In two-dimensional art, this is the area in which an artist creates their work.

Two-dimensional art, more commonly referred to as 2D art, is one of the most common types of art. Despite existing for centuries, there’s still something about 2D art that seems to capture the imagination. It could be its simplicity or how it can be used to communicate powerful ideas with ease. Whatever the reason, 2D art is a popular and versatile form of expression.

This article will look at what 2D art is and discuss some examples of 2D art. We’ll also take a look at 2D art drawing and painting-all while skimming through the essential question of “Is 2D concept art dying?”

2D Artwork Definition

Two-dimensional art refers to any form of visual art that exists in two dimensions. 2D artforms can include drawings, paintings, prints, and photographs. This group does not include 3D artworks such as sculptures, installations, and 3D paintings.

2D Art Examples

Some famous examples of 2D art include drawings, paintings, prints, and photographs. These can be created using a variety of mediums, such as pencil, charcoal, ink, watercolors, and oil paints. Most of the traditional fine arts are two-dimensional, with the exception of course, of sculpture and architecture.

2D art can communicate a wide range of ideas and emotions and be versatile and expressive. One may also use it to create beautiful and intricate designs. Two-dimensional art is easy to move and display in a wide range of settings which makes it both popular and more practical than some 3D art forms.

2D Art Drawing

Most drawings are two-dimensional if the artist is using traditional methods. Typically 2D art drawings are made using paper, chalk, charcoal, pencils, or colored inks. Of course, with advances in technology, it’s possible to take a 2D drawing and turn it into a 3D dimensional artwork using digital techniques.

In two-dimensional art, this is the area in which an artist creates their work.

2D Art Painting

Paintings are another typical example of 2D dimensional artworks. Painting has been around for quite a while and is a form of 2D art. A two-dimensional painting can capture a moment in time, tell a story, or express emotions.

A variety of materials, including oil paints, acrylics, watercolors, and pastels, can be used for these paintings. If a painting has three-dimensional elements, it may move into the classification of either 3D wall sculpture or a mixed media artwork. However, there are occasional examples of 3D paintings that use layers of traditional materials to build a 3D effect.

Recently a series of art exhibitions have taken the 2D artworks of famous painters and turned them into immersive three-dimensional experiences. Examples of this evolution from 2D to 3D can be seen in the immersive Van Goh, Klimt, and Monet exhibits.

Is 2D Concept Art Dying?

2D concept art is a style of art used to create the look and feel of a game, movie, or book. Artists can create character designs, backgrounds, and props using 2D art. Comic artists, illustrators, and graphic artists may all produce concept art.

Traditionally, 2D concept art is often used in the early stages of development when the team is still deciding on the look and feel of the project. It can help convey the idea to the rest of the team and get feedback from stakeholders.

Some people believe that 2D concept art is dying, as more and more projects are moving towards 3D art or digital art. However, many projects still require 2D concept art, and it is a special skill to have.

Lee Cox
Abstract Mixed Media

"I’m aging.  While I paint, my memories collide and combine with my current thoughts and emotions.  I try to capture the result on canvas. I assemble paper items that have a strong personal meaning, tear them into scraps and glue them to the canvas.   It looks messy and disorganized, a collage of non-linear thinking.  When it’s dry, I sand, scrape, draw and paint until only a few memories and thoughts remain.  I can recognize them, but others may wonder what they’re seeing.  I like that.  The finished work resembles a weathered but still energetic puzzle.  Just like me."

Nicole Cromwell
Acrylic Painting

"I create acrylic abstract ocean and landscapes on canvas and wood panels. My paintings are often a reflection of my personality with a combination of a calm, compassionate energy and a bold confidence. Collections range from peaceful and serene to vibrant and joyful, reflecting the balance I strive for in life.

I’m endlessly inspired by the beauty of the Monterey Bay and Big Sur with the healing energy of the ocean ever present. Many of my paintings have poetry written on the raw canvas beneath the many layers of color and the words have had a profound effect on many of my collectors."

Barbara Dill-Varga
Acrylic painting and photography

"I grew up in the midwest, but when we moved to Carmel, I became mesmerized by the beauty of the coast. As local poet Robinson Jeffers wrote: “This place is the noblest thing I have ever seen.”  I notice Nature's texture, shapes, color, and patterns that repeat and/or are broken. I like to capture juxtapositions of opposites. I see geometrical shapes everywhere. I enjoy abstract painting with acrylic paint, use some mixed media, and often start my artistic journey through my photographs."

Oil paintings

"I am an oil painter who focuses primarily on painting outdoors from nature.  Plein Air painting forces me to paint with honesty and immediacy in order to capture the fleeting effects of light and shadow.  I find this to be an exciting and inspirational way to paint and I never tire of it.  I later use some of my plein air paintings to create larger studio works.  I have been painting this way for 35 years now and plan to keep on going - so much to paint and so much to express, so I will never run out of subject matter.  Lucky me!"

"A printmaker by training, prone to flights of installation and participatory art' While my prints invite engagement with the protean dance between sky and water, often my works encourage participation by setting up materials and instructions as artworks to be played out by the observers.

"My paintings express the powerful dynamics of earth and sky, revealing the inner workings behind the apparent, the flow of natural forces, changing of seasons, shifts of light and space. They reflect my innate connection with Nature and sense her hidden power.

The prints and digital images of recent years have focused on the male nude in various contexts: spinning, diving, running and floating. The figures are placed in transition, confusion, serenity, or distress. They combine my love of the male form with metaphorical states of the human condition."

Kevin Hart
Furniture designer & painter

"My artwork is based on daily observations that quietly grab my attention. All these little visual diaries add to my palette and subject matter. I combine my waking existence with my dreams.

My work serves as a bridge between my conscience and sub-conscience, where there is room for freedom and non-judgement; unchartered territory to explore in painting."

Ellen Henrici
Paintings

"Mandalas have been the primary subject of my current painting practice. A vision of the Big Bang and the birth of stars at the beginning of time was my original inspiration for painting mandalas. Out of chaos the beautiful order of the universe was formed. This thought lives at the root of my creative process.

Using watercolor or acrylic paint on paper or canvas, I build up layered washes to create the tone and background atmosphere from which the mandalas emerge. Within the multiple layers of color, I light upon a focal point from which a circular dance of rhythm, balance and dimension flows, creating a journey for the mind’s eye."

Monica Johnson
Acrylic Paintings

"I feel that the power of my paintings come from what is inside me, not just from outside influences.

‘Spacious’, ‘timeless’, and ‘untethered’ are sensations that I aim to evoke in my artwork. I often begin my paintings by writing inspirational words on the canvas as a way to set the intention for the artwork. Layers are created with various materials, scraping back layers to reveal its history, then adding more layers. In this process I take what draws me to the beauty of nature and human experiences and bring it to the canvas by using my own voice."

Sunyata
Oil Paintings

"I have dreamed of and painted the Big Sur landscape since 1998, and first studied with Ronna Emmons, a quintessential Big Sur artist. I’ve displayed work at the Henry Miller Library, Esalen Institute, PG Art Center and local galleries, currently Loma Vista. Fire destroyed our home on Pfeiffer Ridge and my family moved to Carmel. Now I travel back with artists friends to enjoy and to paint the magnificent coastline.

Big Sur is a stretch and a push; its bigness is a paradox of constant motion and deep stillness. My painting name “Sunyata’’ was given by a meditation teacher to connote that empty/full Silence. The sky and ocean, the land and wind always still my busy mind. I use broad strokes
and small canvases to convey the collision of the natural forces into quiet. It gives me great pleasure that visitors take the ultimate quietude of nature home with them."

Jean Vengua is a Filipino American artist and author. Through various, mostly analog processes and media, she explores, rearranges, and recycles the transient materials and fragments of a life. Her work is often (though not always) experimental, documenting life during an era of great, exponential change and instability through mixed media drawings, paintings, collage, small artist books, and poetry. Her newsletter is Eulipion Outpost at jeanvengua.substack.com

Kate Warthen
Oil & Watercolor Paintings

"I am primarily a plein air painter, working in oils or watercolor, in an impressionistic style. Whether an interior or a landscape, I prefer to paint on site because I get a more complete impression when time of day or seasonal aspects are apparent.

My goal is to become a better storyteller and always grow as a painter."

Christine Watten
Painting, drawing, ceramics

"I am drawn into expressing the landscape as a way to advocate for it.  Equilibrium /disequilibrium shows itself in the metaphor of the tree.

The California Oaks is a powerful personal symbol of ‘axis mundi' - finding the center / finding home, rooting / creating, which is threatened to be pushed off-kilter through environmental chaos and its resulting anxiety."

Penny Whent
Acrylic Paintings

"I currently paint abstract impressionist landscapes inspired by the water and forests of the Monterey Peninsula and surrounding areas.

I was first influenced by my father, an architect and photographer, who moved the family to Pacific Grove where I attended high school and later took art classes at Monterey Peninsula College.

I am primarily self-taught.  A paralegal by trade, I have painted part-time all my life and now paint full-time in my Monterey home studio and work predominantly in acrylics on canvas.  My daily endeavor isto make beautiful art."

Thomas Whent
Acrylic Painting

Thomas paints splatter abstract paintings incorporating heavily textured backgrounds overlaid with vibrant, multi-faceted layers of color and works primarily in acrylics and mixed media on stretched canvas.  He also has a new series of folk art paintings featuring vivid colors, flattened perspective, strong forms in simple arrangements, immediacy of meaning and incorporating pointillistic detail.

A California General Building Contractor by trade, Tom uses his knowledge of building materials and applications to create the background medium in many of his paintings by applying a thick spackle impasto with a masonry finishing trowel to create a boldly textured first coat before applying several layers of acrylic paint.

Tom currently paints daily at his home studio in Monterey, CA alongside his artist wife, Penny, in addition to building custom art frames.

Sofanya White
Oil/Acrylic Paintings & Wood Carvings

"My desire is to depict the reality that WE ARE NATURE and not separate from it,  that everything is energy, vibration, frequency and that all things are connected.
I have come to realize that my so-called “mistakes” actually made for much more interesting imagery as I continued to paint and not give up on it due to my limited judgement of what I thought it should look like.  This was pivotal and began my “Stream of Consciousness”  art which I’ve found to be a powerful process for mining the subconscious or
“Universal Consciousness”.
This way of creating and living applies to painting, sculpture or any other materials because it is all about the intention to “Trust the Process”.

Elizabeth Wrigthman
Acrylic Painting

"I spend time daily in the woods and fields of Monterey County… in ecstasy near the rivers, ponds and wetlands. At night two owls call back and forth in the adjoining canyon.  The cognizance of ordinary sparrows in beautiful,  tall, dry weeds, regarding me and one another… The crows who bark at me, mimicking the sound of my broom strokes, sweeping the deck.  This is why I paint."

What are the two dimensions of art?

Two-dimensional art consists of drawing, painting, and printmaking; three-dimensional art consists of sculpture, including installation, and kinetic art.

What type of art form is two

Two-dimensional art occurs on flat surfaces, like paper, canvas, or even cave walls. This art can be further divided into three main categories: drawing, painting, and printmaking. All art that occurs on a flat surface is one or a combination of these three activities.

What is composition in two

When a work of art is classified as being 2-dimensional, it means that the composition possesses the dimensions of length and width but does not possess depth. All 2-dimensional pieces of art, such as drawings, paintings, and prints, are made up of shapes.

What element of art describes a two

Shape - an element of art that is a two-dimensional area that is defined in some way. A shape may have an outline around it or you may recognize it by its area. Geometric shapes - precise shapes that can be described using mathematical formulas.
