If you have traditional cataract surgery, you'll need to follow an eye drop regimen before and after. You'll be prescribed an antibiotic eye drop and anti-inflammatory eye drops. These drops help prevent infection and inflammation.

Dexamethasone is a commonly prescribed generic, and it can be marketed as Vexol or Maxidex. Newer drugs are Durezol, Lotemax, Alrex and Pred Forte (also called Omnipred). You might be required to use the drop for a few days, or a month after the surgery.
