Aptitude Test & License Renewal Frequency and Period Level 1
  • 1. For persons who obtained their licenses after 2011.12.9, their license validity and renewal frequency is 10 years and renewal period of 1 year (please see below *)
  • 2. For persons who obtained their licenses before 2011.12.8, their license validity and renewal frequency is 7 years or the expiration date shown on their a renewal period of 6 months (please see below *)

  • 1. For persons who obtained their licenses after 2011.12.9, if renewed their license validity and renewal frequency is 10 years and renewal period of 1 year (please see below *)
  • 2. For persons who obtained their licenses before 2011.12.8, if renewed their license validity and renewal frequency is 9 years or the expiration date shown on their current licenses and they have a renewal period of 6 months (please see below *)
  • ※ Renewal Period : The driver has up to December 31 of the year in which the license becomes expired to get the license renewed
  • ※ Regardless of Level 1 or 2 type, for drivers above the age of 65, the renewal frequency is shortened to 5 years.
  • ※ Level 2 drivers over the age of 70 must take the aptitude test (this applies to licenses marked as needing an aptitude test.

PenaltiesLevel 1
  • KRW 30,000 penalty will be incurred for persons on taking the aptitude test within the allowed renewal period (higher penalties might apply for persons who received their licenses before 2011.1.24)
  • License will be cancelled if not renewed within 1 year from the last date of the renewal period expiration.
Level 2
  • KRW 20,000 penalty will be incurred for persons on renewing their licenses within the allowed renewal period
  • On 2011.12.9 the regulation for suspending or cancelling driver’s licenses for non-renewal violations has been revoked. Therefore, for persons who had their license suspended due to non-renewal before 2011.12.9 will re-instated and their licenses not cancelled. However, for persons who had their licenses cancelled before 2011.12.9 due to non-renewal violation will still remain cancelled.
  • For drivers over the age of 70 and not renewing their license within one year of the allowed renewal period will have their licenses cancelled (only applies to licenses that are marked as needing renewal)
For non-payment of the penalties
  • additional penalty of 5% will be added and additional interest of 1.2% will be incurred each month on a cumulative basis as long as the payment is in default.
  • maximum of 77% additional penalties can be incurred and the payment can be forcibly enforced depending on the situation by law.
Re-Apply for Renewal After Non-Renewal Penalty Has Been Incurred
  • Within 5 years of penalty period, take Traffic Safety Training for persons with suspensions or cancellations, Health Check, Written Exam (Driving Course Test and On-Road Driving Exam exempt)
  • Preparations : valid ID, color photo x 2 (designated size), no representatives allowed
  • After 5 years, must retake all exams and tests again without other confirmed exemptions.
