Directions;                Answer the following questions in complete sentences; an outline alone or a bulleted list is not acceptable.

In fact, the overwhelming centrality of politics among the causes of the sectional crisis and, ultimately, the Civil War, was clear well before the first shots were fired.  In 1858, Senator William H. Seward of New York famously described what he called an “irrepressible conflict between opposing and enduring forces” that could only end once the United States became “entirely a slaveholding nation, or entirely a free labor nation.”  Despite notable attempts to forge a political compromise over the issue of slavery and its extension, successive generations of American leaders simply failed to come up with a workable permanent solution to this particular conundrum.

                                                               - Johanthan Earle, historian

By the late 1840’s the economies of the two sections were evolving.  Those changes accelerated the end of the era of compromise and prompted a decade of conflict that culminated in the Civil War…Both sets of goals – economic development and antislavery – shaped the Republican platform.  Yet there is little question which was preeminent.  The antislavery goals were limited…Republicans in their 1856 and 1860 platforms spelled out a coherent economic platform.

 b) Briefly explain how ONE specific event, development or circumstance that is not explicitly mentioned in the excerpts could be used to support Earle’s argument.

Khan Academy has some GREAT, GREAT videos on how to approach the Short Answer section of the test. The link is above and they have multiple types of questions to look at and discuss.

Which of the following contributed most to the trend in African American migration from the South between 1940 and 1949?

The economy, jobs, and racial discrimination remained top factors for black migration to the North. The advent of World War II contributed to an exodus out of the South, with 1.5 million African Americans leaving during the 1940s; a pattern of migration which would continue at that pace for the next twenty years.

How did the Spanish efforts to convert Native Americans to Christianity differ from the efforts of the English in Puritan New England?

Spanish colonists often treated colonization as a means of proselytizing native peoples while many New England colonists sought to create separate religious communities. New England colonists made religion more central to government and civic engagement than did the Spanish.
